Fall is finally here in Greensboro. The season of pumpkins and changing leaves, crisp cool air, scarves and boots. But it’s also a precursor to winter, which can be a rough season for your home’s exterior. Fall, then, is the perfect time to do maintenance on your home in preparation for the coldest months. Maybe you’ll find that all you need is a little weatherstripping. On the other hand, you might find yourself in need of a window and door replacement. If that’s the case, Zen Windows Carolina is here to help.
Here’s a list of a few things you might need to take care of this fall:
Weatherstripping should be found surrounding both your windows and doors. In the case of windows, it’s in between the sash and the frame. In the case of your doors, it wraps around all four sides. But weatherstripping can become worn down, so before it gets too cold, it’s a good time to check on it. If you have replacement windows from Zen, weatherstripping is that much easier, with fusion-welded sashes and Intercept® warm edge spacers and sealant built into the frame.
This is also a good time to check the finish on both the interior and exterior of your windows and doors. If you have wood windows and doors, they may be in need of restaining before winter. Steel frames might have peeling paint. If you have vinyl windows or patio doors, you should still check the frames for any obvious damage, but may be able to skip this step. High quality vinyl is durable and never needs to be repainted.
Fall is a beautiful season, but it can be a bit of a messy season, as well. Dirt, debris, and bugs trying to find shelter from the cold can take their toll on your window sills and entryways. This isn’t a major concern, but you do want to wipe clean your window sills and threshold in order to keep them in good shape.
Light a candle and hold it beside your windows or patio doors. If you notice the flame pulling in a particular direction, your windows and doors are losing too much heat or letting too much cold air in. If this is an issue with caulking or weatherstripping, it can easily be fixed. If your weatherstripping or caulking are fine, however, and you still get this effect, it may be time for a window replacement, and the soonerthe better.
Fall is a gorgeous season, and it can be a great season for your home. Just don’t forget to take the proper precautions for winter. Contact Zen Windows Carolina today for a free five minute quote on window and door replacement in Greensboro.
