Finding the right window style is like choosing the right hairdo. You want something attractive and modern that doesn’t date you or make you stand out for all the wrong reasons. New window styles are available for any style of home and vary with your personal preference. Even within one style, there are many options. For example if you chose grids in your windows, you have the option to choose between a colonial, half-colonial, diamond, or prairie grid patterns.

If you want to keep it simple, you could choose the popular double-hung window. Casement windows open outward and are one of the many new window styles to try if you have trouble insulating your home from inclement weather. Awning windows allow you to take in the sights and sounds of a rainy day while staying dry. Bay windows give added dimension and perspective to the vantage point of any room that has one. Slider windows move right to left as opposed to up and down like a double-hung window. A single-hung window looks similar to a double-hung window, but only one half of the window opens and closes. Fixed windows can also be purchased for rooms where a window that opens could present a safety hazard.

Once you determine how or if you want your window to open, you can then select the material for your window frame. Wooden frames are very attractive but are generally far more expensive and require more maintenance. However, with proper maintenance, wooden window frames can last multiple decades. Aluminum windows are another choice as they are not prohibitively expensive but are still durable. However, if energy-efficiency is a relevant factor, you may be better off with a fiberglass or vinyl window. Once you consider any homeowner association regulations that may limit your creativity, choosing from new window styles can be a fun and rewarding process.
